LEVEE/FLOODWALL SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT—November 21, 2018 Update

levee image Nov. 21, 2018

Improvements to the Cedar Falls levee and floodwall are nearing completion. The new levee floodwall and earthen levee sections have been raised 2 feet to the new flood protection level. All flood protections are in place but other work will continue into the spring of 2019. With the wet fall season and the flooding during the summer months, aesthetic and trail improvements will be delayed until next year.

North of 1st Street, construction will continue in the spring with the installation of precast caps, decorative lights, a new promenade, stairs, and trails. The new concrete floodwall has been constructed from the Ice House to the First Street Bridge. Until the new trail is constructed, the trail closures will remain in effect for this area.

South of 1st Street and around the Waste Water Facility, crews have finished raising the earthen levee and have finalized the construction of the plaza walls and planters near 2nd Street. In the springtime, crews will finish installing trails, stairs, and finishing the surrounding area with topsoil and seeding. Trail closures will be in effect between 1st Street and Washington Park.

Remaining work is anticipated to be completed by June of 2019. For additional information and updates for the Levee project, sign up for e-mail notifications through “Notify Me” on the City’s web page: www.cedarfalls.com/Levee
