Hwy 58 / Viking Rd. Project

Iowa Highway 58 & Viking Road Interchange Construction

Project Description:

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Iowa 58 (IA 58) and Viking Road Interchange Construction Project is underway. It is scheduled to be a two year project. The project includes converting the current intersection from an “at grade” one to a “grade separated” interchange. Viking Road will cross over IA 58. The interchange will become a single point interchange. That means the entrance and exit ramps for IA 58 will meet Viking Road at a single point controlled by a traffic signal.

Construction Overview:

There will be many “stages” of construction as the project progresses from start to finish. Both IA 58 and Viking Road will remain open throughout construction, however with reduced lanes. In the first stage of construction, excavation work begins on the northbound section of IA 58. The construction zone will extend from Shawnee Road to the Mayor’s Pedestrian Bridge. A significant amount of excavation will be needed to lower IA 58. Work will also include construction of the northbound exit and entrance ramps. During this work, northbound IA 58 traffic will be shifted to the southbound lanes and traffic will run head-to-head in the area of the construction zone. The highway will remain open.

Work in 2018 will also occur on Viking Road. The eastbound lanes of Viking Road will be under construction first, generally between Nordic Drive and Andrea Drive. In addition, a portion of Nordic Drive and the southbound lanes of Andrea Drive, both areas south of Viking Road, will be under construction. Eastbound traffic on Viking Road will be shifted to the westbound lanes and traffic will be run head-to-head through the construction zone. Later in the summer, the traffic will be switched to the newly constructed eastbound lanes and the westbound lanes will be built. Viking Road and access to all businesses in the area will remain open. To maintain access, temporary pavement and traffic signals will be installed.

Work through the end of the year is anticipated to include:

  • Highway 58 paving
  • Highway 58 northbound exit and entrance ramp paving
  • Retaining walls will be built in sections, so there will be some work that starts in certain areas
  • Completion of Viking Road paving
  • Completion of Andrea Drive paving
  • Completion of Nordic Drive paving
  • Recreational Trail paving
  • Traffic Signal at Nordic Drive
  • Traffic Signal at Andrea Drive

We anticipate by late November two lanes of traffic will be open in both directions on Highway 58 and two lanes of traffic open on Viking Road.

Work expected soon after that, with more updates as construction progresses, includes:

  • Viking Rd open with one lane in each direction. (Traffic lanes will switch to use the north side of the road (westbound lanes), south side will be under construction.)
  • Southbound Andrea Dr. to be closed (south of Viking), traffic to use Viking Plaza Drive to enter Viking Plaza area.
  • Nordic Dr. to be closed (south of Viking), traffic to use Chancellor Drive.
