The City of Cedar Falls is excited to announce that the Downtown Streetscape Project has been named the Special Projects Grand Prize Engineering Excellence Award winner by the American Council of Engineering Companies, Iowa Chapter.
The Downtown Streetscape Project, completed in 2022, included the update of the area parkade brick as well as the addition of concrete twig benches, decorative light poles, and conduits for electricity. Hubs were also added that consisted of benches, trash cans, and bike racks. The goal of the project was to increase walkability and create cohesion in the growing area.
The project was designed by Snyder and Associates and managed by the City's Engineering Division. To be considered for recognition by the American Council of Engineering Companies, entries are judged on the uniqueness and/or innovative application of new or existing techniques, future value to the engineering profession, and complexity as well as the social, economic, and sustainable design considerations.
"Over the years, the Downtown District has really spread its wings past Main Street," said Amanda Huisman, Communications Specialist for the City of Cedar Falls. "We wanted to bring a sense of unity to the area as it grows and help cater to a wider variety of transportation so that more people can experience everything this amazing district has to offer. Thank you to our community partners, the contractors and design team on the project, as well as the incredible group of City engineers for continuing to move Cedar Falls forward."
